 ## Estuary Clinic yoga has a new home

We're delighted to be welcoming Estuary Clinic yoga to The Salutation Inn. Our Assembly Room studio is a calm, characterful space in the heart of Topsham — a place to roll out your mat, exhale, and settle in.

This move feels like a natural next step. Long-time friends Lisa, owner of Estuary Clinic, and our Amelia are bringing their worlds together to offer a warm, thoughtful yoga space under one roof. Amelia trained with Lisa, and after many years practising side by side, this new chapter lets Estuary yoga stretch into a little more space while becoming a gentle part of life at The Salutation.

You'll see familiar faces and new ones too. Our experienced teachers offer a rich mix of classes for all levels — from steady morning flows to slower, restorative sessions. Whether you're looking to build strength, ease tension, or simply take an hour for yourself, there's room for you here. And afterwards, you're always welcome to wander downstairs for a nourishing breakfast or relaxed lunch.

Same spirit, new setting. You're warmly invited to share this next chapter with us.

 ## Styles

You may have seen yoga classes described in a variety of ways. Under the umbrella term of 'yoga' (which means 'union'), there are many different styles of teaching and approaches to the practice.

These styles have been influenced by ancient traditions, dedicated experts, modern practices and a growing demand for better wellbeing in a fast-paced Western world.

It is important to remember that all forms of yoga carry the same objective – to cultivate a connection between body and mind, and develop a sense of inner peace, physical health and self-respect.

Here is a short summary to describe each style of yoga we offer. The best way to understand what yoga can offer you is to try a class. You can also contact us and speak to a teacher, who will help you find a class to suit your needs and abilities.

 ### Yoga

 **Hatha Yoga**
A general, foundational style focussing on basic postures (asanas), breathing (pranayama), and relaxation. Classes are usually slow-paced and ideal for beginners.

 **Raja Yoga**
Often called the "royal path", Raja Yoga emphasises meditation, mental discipline, and ethical principles based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Physical postures are minimal.

 **Kundalini Yoga**
A spiritual and energetic practice aimed at awakening kundalini energy at the base of the spine. Classes include chanting, breathwork, repetitive movements, and meditation.

 **Iyengar Yoga**
Highly alignment-focussed, using props like blocks, straps, and bolsters. Precise instruction makes it excellent for injury recovery and deep anatomical understanding.

 **Ashtanga Yoga**
A rigorous, structured practice following a fixed sequence of poses. Physically demanding and athletic, it builds strength, stamina, and discipline.

 **Vinyasa Yoga**
A fluid style where movement is synchronised with the breath. Sequences vary widely, making classes creative and dynamic, often physically challenging.

 **Power Yoga**
A modern, fitness-oriented evolution of Ashtanga. Emphasises strength, cardio and intensity with less focus on tradition or spirituality.

 **Rocket Yoga**
A playful, fast-paced adaptation of Ashtanga that encourages modifications and advanced poses earlier in the practice.

 **Yin Yoga**
Slow, meditative practice where poses are held for several minutes to target connective tissues and improve flexibility and joint health.

 **Restorative Yoga**
Extremely gentle and calming, using props to fully support the body in restful poses. Designed for stress relief and healing.

 **Therapeutic Yoga**
Adapted to individual health needs, often used alongside medical treatment to address pain, injuries, or chronic conditions.

 **Chair Yoga**
A highly accessible practice using a chair for support, suitable for older adults, office settings, or those with limited mobility.

 **Integral Yoga**
A holistic practice combining postures, breathwork, meditation, chanting, and ethical teachings.

 **Jivamukti Yoga**
A physically demanding vinyasa style infused with spiritual teachings, music, chanting, and ethical principles such as non-violence.

 **Sivananda Yoga**
A traditional system focussing on five principles: proper exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet, and positive thinking.

 **Anusara Yoga**
Alignment-based but heart-centred, emphasising personal expression, philosophy, and community.

 **Aerial Yoga**
Uses fabric hammocks to support, invert, and deepen poses. Combines yoga, acrobatics, and play.

 **AcroYoga**
A partner-based practice blending yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage, focussing on trust and teamwork.

 **Yoga Nidra**
A guided "yogic sleep" meditation practised lying down, inducing deep relaxation and mental clarity.

 **Prenatal Yoga**
Specially designed for pregnancy, focussing on safety, breath awareness, and preparation for childbirth.

 **Trauma-informed Yoga**
Emphasises choice, safety, and nervous system regulation, often used in therapeutic or healing contexts.

 ### Pilates

Pilates was created in 1920 by Joseph Pilates as a form of physical rehabilitation and, more recently, used by dancers and other athletes to prepare their bodies for performance.

In his own words, 'Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit'.

Pilates is another mindful form of exercise, where everything starts from awareness, and the focus is on gaining muscular strength, stability, alignment, and flexibility.

What attracts many people to Pilates is how it develops core strength, working with the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles to achieve a healthy back and great posture.
